Zombie Apocalypse (abbreviated as Zapoc) is a humanoid-avatared sim, hosted on Stacksmash.

Description

In the year 200X, a retrovirus designed as a cure for the AIDS virus was being created in a laboratory in China. However, it was discovered that when a rat infected with the retrovirus was dying, the virus managed to mutate in order to preserve life in the animal's body despite partial or entire brain death. The "undead" rats were stronger than normal rats, due to the lack of muscular inhibition, and at first moved faster as well, until the ligaments tore and they could only move in shambling motions. Within the first 24-72 hours after "reanimation", however, one infected rat could infect and slay all of his cage-mates before slowing down.

The scientists behind the project, curious about its workings, began to study the retrovirus in depth; however, as the virus mutated, it managed to save larger and larger portions of the brain post-"mortem", and one cage of infected rats managed to enact a swarming behavior to break out of their cage. They fled into the streets, biting cats, dogs, and small children; the cats and dogs, having short lifespans, soon succumbed to the elements due to the fever caused by the infection, and rose again as "zombie" animals. Cats and dogs then began to maul small children, who then managed to mob and destroy adults; and thus, the zombie plague was spread rapidly throughout Asia, and then on to the world.

Virus Mechanism

The virus is spread, like AIDS, through bodily fluids; it can be transmitted through saliva, blood, or sexual fluids. The virus, however, only causes a mild fever in the dormant stage, as well as providing some measure of relief from the symptoms of AIDS if one happens to have that virus in their body as well. It is when the infected person is in the final stages of death that the virus becomes most active, preserving the function of the hindbrain and the autonomic nervous system, allowing the victim to resume functioning despite most of the mid and fore-brains being dead tissue. It also seems to, for some reason, heal a good amount of damage dealt, as otherwise the victim could not continue to function.

Zombie properties

Recently risen zombies are what is commonly known as "fast zombies" - that is to say, they are strong, fast, and (in some cases) intelligent. Certain strains of the virus have preserved more intelligence than others, which results in some zombies being smart "leader" types, able to organize other, more animistic zombies in the way that a dog trainer manages to control sheepdogs. Within about 72 hours, however, the muscles deteriorate, and the zombie metamorphoses into what is known as a "slow" zombie.

The surest way to kill a zombie is by destroying the hindbrain; destroying the fore-brain will turn a "leader" zombie into an unintelligent "follower". Due to their increased healing factor, the vital organs require much more damage than would kill a human before they will destroy a zombie.

Important locations

Pacifica

The players begin in Pacifica, meeting up with a small group of survivors in what's basically a totally dead town.

Map of the area, with the safehouse marked

Haven

Haven is the last functional refuge of humans against the Zombie invasion -- at least, as far as they know; the apocalypse seems to have spread across the globe, and Haven was built from the ruins of Daly City, near San Francisco. It's some distance away from the city itself, which was the main infection site for America due to Asian immigrants carrying the disease before the outbreak was fully detected. It's entirely cut off from outside contact.

Seton Medical Center

Seton is outside the boundaries of Haven, just on the outskirts, and thus a constant point of contrition between the zombie hoards, who want to feast on the injured to insure their infection, and the living, who would rather like clean bandages every now and again.

Stanford University

Stanford, in nearby Palo Alto, is home to a lot of research equipment; if the scientists aren't all dead, they might be working on a cure. Optimists hope that they have created their own little refuge.

NPCs

Main NPCS:

  • Alex and Cami, fraternal boy/girl twins holed up in Pacifica
  • A handful of children staying with Alex and Cami whose parents are dead
  • A dog named Sunshine
  • Three goats named Bibbity, Bobbity, and Boo

Also featured are a rather unsuccessful healer (The Healer), a Zombie Fodder Family and the Hoarde of Undead Creatures, abbreviated in logs to The Hoarde. These are zombies.

Upon reaching the research laboratory in Palo Alto, they discovered the Legions of Anonymous guarding the place, as well as several scientists within, such as Bill, Fred and George.

People

In a burst on June 20 2054, a number of Citizens were trapped in this simulation, appearing in Pacifica:

The following were linked in at the same time, but scattered further, and thus weren't found until later:

Name knowledge

Nobody has officially been told the name, but upon spying Zombies and realizing they're winning it's fairly intuitive.

Node

This sim was the entry point for everyone who has seen it. Its completion linked people into Rapture.
