text
The young girl reclines on the grass, leaning backwards but still supported by her hands behind her. In her mind's eye, luxurious wings spread behind her, a nice sweeping wingspan almost the length of her body. Of course, in her mind's eye, the grass was velvet-soft and lush. In reality, as it usually was, the grass was sparse and prickly and altogether not so comfortable. That's reality for you. Never living up to expectations.

When the girl spoke, despite her eyes being on the sky, she addressed the tombstone beside her. Or maybe the corpse below her? No. Tombstone. Much cleaner. "Hey sis. It's been a while."

"I'm still waiting for the soul-crushing loss that's supposed to overwhelm me. I mean, I miss you. I miss you a lot. More than Grandpa, even. But it's not like... they always say it's like losing half yourself. No offense, but you were my sister, not my wife. You're not me just because we looked the same, you know? I mean, we never had any mystical psychic connection or any of that crap. We were just sisters."

Shifting a little to scratch the small of her back, the girl continues. "Anyway, I need your help. See, there's this guy... but he wants to stay here. I have to accept a school this week and I want to go away, to Virginia. But then I'll probably not talk to him nearly as much and, well.."

She scoffs. "Like you'd know anyway. You never dated. You always said school and personal desires come first." Oh. The words she'd spoken sink in, and Jen scowls. "Besides, it's not like I'd ever actually ask you. The only reason I can talk to you is because you're a stupid rock." Still, the answer was fairly obvious. "Fine, I'll go. It'll be good to get away from your shadow. No offence, but you're kind of a huge bitch now you're dead. Always stealing the spotlight."

She sits up, hugging her knees, glancing at the stone sideways through her hair. "Anyway, you'd be proud. I stopped going to those clubs you hate. Well, okay, to be honest, most of them banned me anyway, but... it just seems so...childish. Like I was looking for something I don't need anymore, you know? I mean, sex is great. Sex is awesome. But it's just sex. It's not that important anymore. I can get it whenever I want, it's not... not a challenge. What do I care anyway?" She takes a deep breath, approaching the topic she'd meant to discuss. "Only now I don't have any challenges left. You know me, always striving for something worthwhile. But my business is... succeeding, not thriving, just doing okay. I've never been any good at the whole school thing. I have a boyfriend, kind of two actually. Crimson's still as unworkable as ever. My life is just... stagnating. I need something new. You know?" Looking away from the stone, as if it could see her faint blush, she adds, "So you know, if the whole God thing is real, and you're actually secretly an angel up in heaven somewhere, send me a new challenge ,would you? I don't want your help with it, I just want something to DO with my life. Something exciting and difficult and worthwhile."

Embarrassed, she leaps to her feet, brushing dirt off her jeans. "Yeah, whatever. You never listened when you were alive anyway. Why start now?"
